Not a navigation instrument
This is the clause that matters, so it is first rather than buried in a limitation of liability section.
This site reads a consumer magnetometer through a browser. It is a useful approximation and it is not a certified instrument. Do not rely on it for navigation at sea or in the air, for mountain or wilderness navigation, for emergency or search and rescue work, for surveying, for aligning anything safety-critical, or in any other situation where an incorrect direction could lead to injury, death, or loss of or damage to property.
Specific things that will make the reading wrong, some of them silently:
- Nearby ferrous metal or magnets, including phone cases, car mounts, laptops, speakers, steel furniture, reinforced concrete, vehicles and lifts.
- An uncalibrated sensor, which is offset with no warning on screen.
- Holding the device away from level, which the tilt correction handles progressively worse.
- A declination figure you entered incorrectly, or with the wrong sign. East is positive and west is negative, and reversing that doubles the error rather than removing it.
- Confusing true north with magnetic north, which is the most common error of all.
For anything consequential, use a purpose-built instrument, a chart, and the authoritative magnetic model published by NOAA or your national equivalent.
Accepting these terms
By using Online Compass at onlinecompass.top you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.
What you may do
Use the site for any lawful purpose, personal or commercial, at no cost and without an account. Link to it freely. Quote from it with attribution. Use the bearings, which are facts about the compass rose and are not anyone's property.
What you may not do
- Attempt to interfere with the site's availability or security.
- Scrape it in a way that degrades service for other people.
- Present it, or a copy of it, as a certified or approved navigation aid.
- Remove or obscure the accuracy statements when reproducing its content.
Accuracy of the content
The bearings for the points of the rose are exact by definition: they are multiples of 11.25 degrees. The guides are written carefully and each states the accuracy you should expect from the method it describes. That said, the content is provided for general information, it may contain errors, and it is not professional advice of any kind, including navigational, surveying, engineering, religious or legal advice.
If you find an error, tell me. Corrections are the most welcome mail this site gets.
Availability
The site is provided as it is, with no promise that it will be available, uninterrupted or error-free. It may change or be withdrawn at any time without notice.
Disclaimer and liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the site is provided without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Online Compass shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, data, goodwill, or any loss arising from your use of or reliance on this site or its content.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability where it would be unlawful to do so, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, so parts of the above may not apply to you.
Third-party links
The site links to external resources, including NOAA's magnetic model. Those sites are not under my control and I am not responsible for their content or their privacy practices.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction, save that if you are a consumer resident elsewhere you keep the benefit of any mandatory protections of your own local law.
Changes
These terms may be updated. The date at the top changes when they do, and continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the revised terms.
